Why we make stylescapes before designing

Our design process at Hey starts with the delivery of stylescapes (or moodboards). After we have talked intensively with the client and approved the brief at Hey, we deliver what we call stylescapes (or moodboards). And we do it  before we start designing any brand or logo.

To better understand each other, a stylescape is a design deliverable that helps us to present the visual language of a project. It consists of a collection of images, textures, typographies, colors, shapes and -depending on the case- interfaces and logos. It is a moodboard on steroids.

It’s shorter in the long run

Every project starts with an intense discovery session with our client. It all starts with an in-depth conversation where we gather more information about the business, its purpose, its target customer and what ideas it has for its brand. This workshop (or discovery session) culminates in a brief that must be approved by the client to begin design work.

Unfortunately we still don’t know how to read minds. So when the client describes their idea as “modern” or “eye-catching” everyone at the table is thinking something different. Let’s look at the example below:

HIPERATENCIÓN is the project of a Chilean psychologist specialized in ADHD (commonly known as Attention Deficit Disorder). The idea was to generate a brand that celebrates what makes neuro-diverse people unique under a colorful, vibrant and eye-catching aesthetic. The reason is because they are usually people who quickly change their focus of attention and have a special preference for adrenaline.

Colorful. Vibrant. Eye-catching… What colors? Eye-catching how?

We present two stylescapes that may seem very different from each other but both of them represent the chosen concepts. In this way the client can see different paths and options of look & feel and select the one that makes the most sense in line with what he/she was looking for.

Stylescapes allow us to align visions.

The stylescape or moodboard allows us to align visions with our clients, reducing the gap between what is said and what was intended.
Once we have selected and approved the way forward we can continue with our design process and start developing the first concrete proposals. This allows the client to be part of the design process. Also, to get involved and excited about the final result.
